The Sorting Hat told Harry that he would do very well in Slytherin but Harry told it not to place him there. I always wonder what would have happened it the Sorting Hat had actually put Harry in Slytherin.

I agree with this statement but only to a point! I believe that he is one-dimensional and is portrayed that way by J.K to make him utterly terrifying! He is just a dark, sadistic and pure evil wizard who has no concept of consequence for his actions, which is evident when he tries to kill Harry the first time. His absolute lack of compassion was obvious in his younger years dating back to his actions at the Orphanage. He is the Hitler of the wizarding world. Though in saying this, I think we reach a point where he is more than this one-dimensional villian… His heritage, that being related to Salazar Slytherin, probably made him despise his own mother to no end after she had a relationship with his muggle father. In turn, this led him to the belief that he must rid the wizarding world of this kind, these ‘mudbloods’ and muggles, so no other pureblooded family could be tainted like he would be forever. He probably felt inferior and he didn’t want to be inferior, which is what being a half-blood made him, at least in the eyes of the pureblooded families and himself. But it really does come down to the fact that he was cruel, arrogant, sadistic, manipulative, sociopathic and megalomaniacal.
I think the main reason you don’t think he is ‘real’ is because you cannot fathom the fact that someone can be the way Voldemort was as he ulitmately has no factual or deep emotional basis for his hatred, just his personality and misguided beliefs. Again, I reiterate the point he is the wizarding worlds Hitler. Adolf Hitler also had NO basis for his hatred and ghastly acts towards the Jewish community. You have to understand that there are definitely people like Voldemort who exist, you just haven’t been exposed to them… yet.
